Remove Line Breaks

Join wrapped lines while keeping your paragraphs.

Repair text copied from PDFs or emails, or join a list with your own separator.

Choose how lines join

Keep paragraphs or turn every line into one continuous piece.

What should happen to the line breaks?

Every line break becomes a single space, blank lines included. The result is one continuous block of text.

What does a line break remover do?

A line break is an invisible character that tells software to start a new line. A line break remover deletes those characters, or swaps them for something else such as a space or a comma, so that text flows as one piece again.

The useful part is choosing which breaks go. A break in the middle of a sentence is almost always unwanted. A blank line between two paragraphs usually is wanted. This tool offers four modes so you can make that choice instead of flattening everything.

Why copied PDF text gets broken lines

A PDF describes where each piece of text sits on the page. It generally does not record that a group of lines forms one paragraph. When you copy from it, the viewer has to guess, and the usual result is a hard line break at the end of every visual line — the same place the page happened to wrap.

Plain-text email has a similar habit: many mail programs wrap lines at a fixed width before sending. Paste either kind of text into a wider box and you get short, ragged lines that no longer reflow.

Ticking Fix common PDF copy problems also trims stray spaces at line edges, collapses repeated spaces and removes soft hyphens. Page numbers, running headers and footnote markers are part of the copied text and are not removed automatically; delete those by hand. The guide to fixing text copied from a PDF covers the whole process.

Remove line breaks vs remove paragraph breaks

In plain text a single line break ends a line, and a blank line — two breaks in a row — separates paragraphs. They are the same character used in different quantities, which is why a careless find-and-replace destroys both at once.

Mode Single breaks Blank lines Use it for
Join lines with spaces Become a space Become a space One paragraph, a caption, a form field that accepts a single line
Keep paragraph breaks Become a space Kept as one blank line Articles, quotations, anything with more than one paragraph
Remove breaks with no separator Deleted Deleted Rejoining a long code, key or URL that was wrapped
Custom separator Become the separator Skipped Turning a column of values into a comma- or pipe-separated list

The difference between the kinds of break, including the “soft” breaks that word processors use, is explained in line break vs paragraph break vs soft break.

How “Keep paragraph breaks” works

  1. The text is split into lines, and spaces at the start and end of each line are trimmed.
  2. Any empty line, or line containing only spaces, is treated as a paragraph boundary. Several blank lines in a row count as one boundary.
  3. The lines between two boundaries are joined with a single space.
  4. A line that begins with a list marker (-, *, • or a number such as 1.) starts a new line instead of being folded into the one above.
  5. Paragraphs are written out with exactly one blank line between them.

The rule depends on blank lines. If the source separates paragraphs only by indentation, with no empty line between them, the tool cannot see where one ends and the next begins. In that case add a blank line between paragraphs first. The guide to removing line breaks without losing paragraphs shows how.

Examples

Join lines with spaces

Every break becomes a space, so the two paragraphs merge into one block.

Keep paragraph breaks

Lines are joined inside each paragraph and the blank line between them survives.

Custom separator: comma

One item per line becomes a single comma-separated line. The empty line is skipped.

CRLF vs LF vs CR

Not every system marks a line break the same way. Windows uses two characters, carriage return plus line feed (CRLF). Linux and current macOS use a single line feed (LF). Very old Mac software used a lone carriage return (CR). A tool that only looks for one of these leaves stray characters behind or misses breaks entirely.

This tool converts all three to LF before doing anything else, so mixed files behave consistently. The result uses LF. More detail is in CRLF vs LF vs CR.

Common use cases

  • Quoting from a PDF

Reflow a copied passage so it wraps naturally inside your own document or note.

  • Replying to plain-text email

Remove the fixed-width wrapping so the text fits whatever window it is read in.

  • Filling single-line fields

Forms, spreadsheet cells and database fields often reject or mangle text that contains line breaks.

  • Building a delimited list

Convert one value per line into a comma-, semicolon- or pipe-separated list for a formula or query.

  • Rejoining a wrapped value

A long key, hash or link that was split across lines can be joined with no separator.

  • Subtitles and transcripts

Merge short caption lines into readable paragraphs before editing.

Privacy

Line breaks are removed by code running in your browser. The text you paste is not uploaded, logged or stored. Only your chosen mode and options are remembered in this browser, and the Reset options button removes them. Details are on the How It Works page and in the privacy policy.

Limitations

  • Paragraphs are detected by blank lines only. Indented paragraphs with no blank line between them are joined together.
  • Poetry, song lyrics, postal addresses, code and tables rely on their line breaks. Joining them damages the content; leave those out or restore them afterwards.
  • Rejoining hyphenated words is a guess. It only merges two lowercase halves, and it cannot know whether the hyphen belonged to a genuine compound, so “well-” + “known” becomes “wellknown”. Read the result.
  • Headings that have no blank line after them are joined to the paragraph that follows.
  • Multi-column PDF pages can copy in the wrong reading order. No line-joining tool can repair that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and the Text Cleaner?

This page does one job with more control over line breaks, including custom separators. The Text Cleaner handles spaces, hidden characters, HTML, Markdown and typography as well, and includes line joining as one of its options.

How do I turn a list into a comma-separated line?

Choose “Replace line breaks with a custom separator” and keep Comma selected. Each line becomes one item and empty lines are skipped. For a comma with no following space, choose Custom text and type a single comma.

Why did two words get stuck together?

“Remove breaks with no separator” inserts nothing, so the last word of one line touches the first word of the next. Use “Join lines with spaces” instead unless you are rejoining a value that was split mid-word.

Does it remove the extra spaces left by wrapping?

Spaces at the start and end of each line are trimmed when lines are joined. To also collapse repeated spaces inside lines, tick “Fix common PDF copy problems”.

Does it work on text with Windows line endings?

Yes. CRLF, LF and CR are all recognised, including a mixture of them in the same text.

Can I get the line breaks back?

Your original text stays in the Input Text box until you change it, and Clear and Move Result to Input have a one-step Undo. The tool does not keep a history beyond that.
